Airtac 2 from Airtech

Hi guys,

I have bought the Airtec2 for application that need’s the Carbon to take all the shapes. I put clear gel coat to the mold and then I live it to cure. After that I spray the mold with a little of airtec 2 for the shapes and then I put all the others material (carbon, resin flow, peel ply etc). When the product is cure I notice that in the part there is too much very-very small “bubbles” let’s say in all part. Is anybody seeing that problem is the past? Does any body now why that happens?

Thx in advice

It sounds more like the resin that you are using…but what brand and type?

Hand lay up or VIP/ Vac. bagged?

ah I know what youre talking about…Ive had it happen when I spray glue into my gelcoat and then lay up.

Its the glue being sprayed out and trapping air…(at least thats what happens to me) and you see the glue spot.

Try using less glue and hold it farther away to get a thin even coverage.

Im gonna try infusene again and see if that problem crops up with their stuff too…supposedly it dissolves and cures with per.

Exactly hydridracers,

that happen, trapping air, propably from glou. I had make infusion and I have this problem.

I have the same problem and when I use less quantity of glou.

i dont think its the airtec… unless your using HUGE amounts of it, this would happen. but ive used stronger gluier stuff… and i dont get airbubbles. your prob have a leak, or not pulling enough cp.

no Ive actually tested it out…If I got a glob of glue on the gel coat I could literally take my finger and lightly dab it and make the stuff let the air loose.

I tried about 10 times and could even get a finger print if I wanted to.

As soon as I spray I know if I need to fix it or something…Id prefer to not use glue but tex sucks balls for working with out it.

I have tested with the same mold two times:

  1. with Airtech, gel coat cured (very small bubbles of air)
  2. Without Airtech but the gel coat on stage B(perfect)

What can I say:(

are you letting the airtech cure when spraying? when i spray super 77, i make sure to spray it with air to have it dry out and bubbles out.

Sorry, what do you mean you spray it with air?

i use a compressor to spray it dry …

Ok, so you spray with 77 and you live it to cure, as I understand. That’s it?

yes b/c i noticed when i sprayed it, little bubbles would form. also, make sure u shack the can REALLY well.

Ok Luisn I will try, thx anyway.

interesting…Im going to try the infuzene and see if its any better than the 3m with regards to trapt bubbles.

George…I figured you knew what I was talking about…Ive run across most problems already. I hope you figure it out and make better parts.

Ohh yes hybridracers,

and really guys you help very much, Werksberg I love your site.

Thank you!

…but with my teaching pay gone, I may be asking for some donations to help off set costs on here…:frowning:

I just read on racingcomposites.com that Super 77 is not compatible with Ester-based resins. Can anybody confirm/debunk this? I’m wondering if that is why George is getting bubbles. I’ve personally used Super 77 when infusing a part with PER (I use the Orthothalic Infusion Resin from FiberglassSupply).

Cheers,

Jeremy

I heard another user say they use 3M 75 spray adhesive…works better because its less permanent… you can work with the fabric still.

I’d be using epoxy with 3M adhesive, but that’s me. Is Orthalic better than iso PER?

I’m not sure exactly what the differences are between Iso- and Ortho-thalic polyester resin. The ortho that I got from fiberglasssupply is definitely lower viscosity than the Iso I got from fiberglast… I tried infusing with the molding iso resing I got from fiberglast and it was like watching molasses flow on a cold winter morning - even when I cut it with 10% solvent to help thin it out.

I’ll have to check out that 3M 75. Thanks for the tip!
