wish me luck

i need your advice on what to do about the mold i made…chuck it and start over or fix it.

it has a few air pockets…it looks way easier on the internet…then when you have epoxy all over your gloves an itch on your nose and the fiberglass is sticking to everything i thought to my self, hmmmm this isnt as easy as it looks. i did figure it out about 3/4 of the way thru. so the back side looks better than the front…

i think i should have started with a thinner fiberglass for the first layer. its the money layer. i think thinner would have conformed better.

anyways, i have a few air pockets. can they be fixed? if so…how???

im not sure what happened here…

im thinking, what if i filled a syringe with mixed epoxy and inject the blisters? then when they set up, sand them smooth. do i need to take a trip to the ghetto and buy a syringe off a heroin junkie (a new one of course)? my luck i would probly go to jail LOL.

Not trying to hijack the thread but is that a KTM Superduke in the garage?? Cool, I have a Tuono! How do you like it?

Ray

hijack away…this is my thread…motorcycle talk is a-ok…

you got it. 2008 superduke. it is probly the best all around motorcycle i have every owned. not the fastest…but know that im getting up there in years (42). i find i would rather ride a slow bike fast, than a fast bike slow…

a tuono eh? v-4 right? that aprilla will be look at real hard when its time for a new bike…
any problems with it?

I have the v-twin, not the 4. Im not even sure the 4 is available yet, I think delivery dates are later this year. Im 45 and absolutely love it, its mental! Midrange grunt like nothing else Ive ridden. Problem when you really want to play, the fuel mileage plummets,…which is why Im on this forum,........Im preparing to make a larger fuel tank. Carbon fibre/kevlar. I want to go from 18 litres to about 22. Not too big or it`ll make it top heavy, but enough to give me a little extra range.

Ray

cool ray…i just read about the v 4 in sport rider or something. sweat bike. my bike is a v twin also. it dynoed at 110 hp i think…have you seen this software? http://www.tomhamburg.net/ it is fantastic…i know it works on aprillas just not sure which models…

anyways, do you have a build thread going for your tank? reply with a link to it so i can follow. are you building your plug yet? which resin do you plan on using?

you know, KTM has a carbon fiber fuel tank available for the super duke in their hard parts catalog…1300 bucks:eek::eek::eek:. and there is a huge thread on the superduke forum about those tanks leaking. how pissed would you be? and KTM isnt warrentying them. a 1300 dollar time bomb sitting in your garage. no thanks…

Ok now I’m hijacking sorry !! Speaking of fuel tanks, I just remembered a fuel tank I did for a go-kart a while ago. The tube through the middle was for the steering column.

:eek::eek: OOMMGG brad…i am speech less. that tank is f-ing bad ass…do you mind answering a few questions while were still off topic?

Fire away !

hmmmm where to start…

  1. what type of resin did you use?

  2. do you know how the tank is holding up?

  3. gasoline, methenol, alcohol, premix? or will it handle all fuels. just gasoline would be of concern to me…

  4. did you make it in one piece or two?

  5. did you bond the 2 pieces together? with what?

  6. is there a bladder on the inside, or did you seal it?

  7. how did you incorpurate the aluminum fittings? i.e. filler neck, breather, AN fittings

  8. i guess what im asking is “how did you build the thing…” did you document the build somewhere? could you post up a thread…

you guys from oz make some pretty cool sh*t…

Hey Doug check out the video in products talk… It’s under MTI hose. Guy is willing to send samples. I use spiral wrap The same way.

Hmm, something to look at for sure! I dont have the build thread going as I have all the fillers, tools, clay, fibres, etc but no resin. Ive had a hell of a time trying to find a resin that will a) stand up to being over a hot engine, I figure a Tg of at least 220F. b) Is resisant to ethanol gasoline c) Is clear, for the cosmetic top coat anyway d) Doesnt require a post cure. e) And is UV resistant Nearest thing I can figure Im going to do is use epoxy for the molds and plugs for the zero-shrink factor, and then Ive found a VE surfboard resin that will fit most of the requirements but I figure Im going to line the tank anyway so that minimizes b)

Ive found a company that will sell a tank for the RSVR (same tank) but its $1500 and only increases the size by 1 litre.

Figured Id try and make one myself, get frustrated, make some other carbon parts, and say that 18 litres isnt so bad! …kidding!

i have watched that video a few times. man that dude works fast huh. i bout a bunch of spiral wrap at the electronics supply last time i was there…do you wrap your spiral wrap in peel ply? i have seen it wrapped in several videos…

i have every thing i need to do the infusion. (i think)…its just this damn mold…put some epoxy on then wait twenty four hours. ya know… im gonna start working on my next plug in between these 24 periods…

brad1 is the man to talk to…did you see that little gem he posted pictures of???maybe he will chime in about the build…

have you seen this resin? it says its fuel resistant but im not sure if its infusable…somebody else should be able to tell us. and uv protective? what about a few coats of automotive clear? that would probly work…now im getting in a little over my head with recommendations. some one should chime in…i have the same iterests as you. car and mc parts. oh maybe a coffee table.

i made one small change to the steam punk infusion vacuum machine. well its a rather large one…a 5 inch vac gauge:eek:. the vacuum machine is complete and ready for service.

tomorrow i will be reinforcing my mold, and hopefully shooting some primer on it on monday…

You went crazy with the sealant!!! Lol I’m digging the gauge!

thanks dallas, sealant wasnt the easiest to apply. i think i will be ready to shoot some primer monday or tuesday. i have a bunch of question on application, mixing, clean up…will you help me bro?

Of course!!! Do you have a cheapo gravity or siphon gun??? Get some acetone as well.

i have 3 hvlp guns…(1) 1.8 tip (1) 1.4 tip and a little touch up gun with a 1.0 tip. i have about 1/3 of a gallon of acetone…will i need mek to reduce the primer? will any of those tips be cool or do i need a bigger size?

Harbor freight has like 10 dollor spray guns that work perfect.

you wouldnt happen to have a model #…i have a harbor freight fairly close…
