I know CF needs UV protection, but is there anything else? Is it the resin or the material that breaks down?
It is the resin that discolors and breaks down.
Only parts in direct sunlight would be my guessimate…
How to know does it resin have UV protection.
So is all resin susceptable to UV? PER and epoxy? What about gel?
You would need to read the resin matrix label to find out if it is UV stabilized or not.
Most, if not all, PER gel coats are UV stabilized, but then most are primered and then painted.
I’d have to look in my Cook Composites “Bible” to check more into it, but I have a rush order for 2x sets of race car windows to make and deliver…
Before buying resin how to know does it resin have UV protection or not. Where to read resin matrix label.
ask before you buy, If they do not know then it probably isn’t or they are just too lazy to read the label.
Google Surfboard epoxy resin. Most epoxies are sensative to UV. I’m about to try Flagship varnish that is suppose to be water clear, I’m told it’s a better combination
This is from the first site you might find
Consider using epoxy and “S” (high strength) cloth or epoxy and carbon fiber cloth. Epoxy is about twice as fracture resistant as polyester, and a little more than twice as expensive (see EPOXY). www.surfsource.com (ss2000) and www.epoxyproducts.com (basic no blush) have good, clear, inexpensive epoxies. Remember that the vast majority of a surfboards’ strength is in the cloth. In equal amounts, “S” cloth and epoxy resin will make a board that is about 50% stronger than a polyester resin “E” cloth board. Carbon fiber and epoxy will make a board that is easily 100% stronger than equal amounts of polyester resin and “E” cloth. These products may not be worth their cost to you. “S” cloth is about twice as expensive as “E” cloth, and carbon fiber cloth is about twice as expensive as “S” cloth (note that even with a deck patch you will only need half as much carbon fiber as “S” so the cost per board is almost equal)

One UV resistant type is System Three’s SB112 (or 113) sailboard/surfboard resin. You can also just pigment the epoxy and opaque what to protect it from UV. …
