Weird Bubble Problem with pics

We had 5 layers and a few extra strategically placed strips to give extrastrength in areas that were cracking when someone pushed on the back of the seat.
Now the seat will support me jumping on it with the seat placed upside down.

Dang, you jumping up and down on it and it doesn’t break!!! It must be a tank…

ha ha ha.
Ok im done laughing.

L.O.L.
I actually can credit it to a good infusion and proper lamination schedule…

(grin)

When you do more than one layer on something like that do you do all the layers at once??? Or do you do each layer separate…

Reason I ask is because I was going to make some carbon gauge pods and was thinking 3 layers… Do you think that would be a little overkill??? Could i use less layers??? I just done want it to crack after you screw it into the A-pillar to hold it tight.

yes you do all the layers at once, I makes some engine covers that are 3 layers and they work fine

Sorry to “hijack” the post a bit…

But do you think 3 layers is overkill on just a guage pod??? Should I drop down to two layers… I am hoping to start doing this as soon as my house is built (that is part of the reason that I added 4’ on the side of the garage  ).

2 layers may be alright, but it might be a little flimsy. I would always add the thrid layer.

I don’t lay all three at once, I might lay the last two at once, but I always lay the first layer by itself to make certain it gets laid with care and doesn’t change the flow of the weave.
in the 5 layers It is one at a time because i shift the layers 45 90 45 etc to get strenght.

Doug,

I don’t know if you tried this yet or not but when I am laying up carbon the weave of first layer is less likely to move if you lay two or three layers at a time.

Don’t you only find yourself doing that in relatively flat molds ?Assuming that your using 77 adhesive on each layer ?Or perhaps your right …it would even work in a complicated shaped mold that way too ?
… 8)

I have not had the luxury of doing too many easy (flat) peices.
If i was doing them, I could see going many layers at once. The Seat doesn’t allow too much layering. i suppose we could try it on the next part, but with all the reinforcement troughs through the bottom, it would be difficult to get more than one layer tucked in to it.

Most of the parts we do would be difficult to do multiple layers. if you are doing something different, let me know.
I am up for any suggestions.

I am just doing one layer at a time and that is a good idea to try more then one at a time. I will give that a shot today

hmmm,i didnt know you could do only one layer, ive always jsut done the three layers from the start and always had problems lol,i might try one layer at a time and see what happens, does this work with vac bagging as well as infusion??

well, Duh?

Just kidding GTfour. You can lay down one or two or three as long as you get good saturation. I always tried to wet out all my material on the table for vacbagging, and then sqeegee it out and throw down as many layers at a time as possible.

i bought a bristle roller ages ago but never used it,would this work as the squegee?? i keep forgetting i have it

the purpose of a bristle roller is to break up those pesky little bubbles and press the cloth down to the surface. The sueegee is used off the mold and is meant to spread the resin as thinly as possible and yet distribute it as evely so the least amount of resin isn wasted in the bleeder cloth.

cool 8) i had a problem last night, posted on fibreglast site but heres a pic

it was vac bagged but i think it was leaking and not bagged for long enough, also looks like a bristle roller may have helped
just wanted to say, this has been an extremely useful thread, cheers guys

Following up on the Super77 trick, are you guys using it over clear gel coat? If so, when the adhesive dissolves, are there any noticeable (cosmetically) traces of it left? I have a project that will not use a gel coat, and I’d love to try the Super77 but I can’t have any residual adhesive to spoil the cosmetics…

it depends on the resin you are using. but on most cases you can’t use it under clear gel. I have never tried it strait on the mold. The VER I am using does not dissolve the super 77
