UV curing resin systems

Anyone ever use a UV curing resin system? I would imagine that this sort of a system would be very beneficial since you could outright control when the resin starts to cure. Any ideas or information regarding this would be appreicated.

I have never used such a method but I’m wondering if it would be possible?

funny you should bring this up, I am just looking into testing this on gelcoat application.

What I intended to do was spray gelcoat up on glass sheet or mould, pop under a UV tunnel until tacky then infuse as normal. When infusion is done, demould and pop back under UV lamps for full hardness on gelcoat.

One major advantage I saw with the UV cure in gelcoat is the cleaning of the spray guns/cup guns which everyone hates would be much reduced/eliminated.

buuuuuuuuut if one uses carbon, how does the UV light get to the inner resin?
I can see fiberglass, since it’s more or less transparent to light when wet.

Unless i’m missing something simple.

I tought about that too, I don’t know much about the UV resin systems, but could it be that the UV kickstarts a chemical reaction that proceeds until completion…? even after the light is removed?

but I guess it’s just like dougie makes it out to be where the UV light is required constantly to cure the resin

Another question regarding UV cure resins, if I was to use it as a surface coating would it be UV stable after it’s cured? would it protect the resin layer beneth it?
