Coloured Eglass looks excellent, but good idea to get hold of a small sample first, as some I have tried seems very stiff and difficult to work with.

wow! Theyve expanded there glass since last time I checked. They only had balck e-glass a few months back.

That’s cool  Price is not much less than real carbon fiber twill though.

Seems to me that eglass is the ideal choice for cosmetic parts!

As long as you dont go over the top, a few silver or blue coloured parts on a bike that is mainly black, are in my mind going to look a lot better than black carbon.

I still don’t like the way they word anything.
IM7 is virtually impossible to get? Since when?
The tri-axial weave is stronger than commercial carbon fiber? I know of a few companies that make commercial carbon fiber 3d weaved fabric in 100oz weights. How is their’s stronger?
and don’t call it silver/white/whatever carbon fiber, if you tell people it isn’t carbon fiber!

just saying.

That was really the only thing i saw… saying it is colored carbon fiber when it is really fiberglass. Bad for business imho. I do like the idea of colored f/g however.

Why buy color fiberglass when you can use clear gel coat, B stage, another layer of clear gel coat with transparent pigment and then lay up the part with fiberglass.

Cheaper and eaiser…

How hard is it to lay up something like this by hand? Is the material usually stiff? Can you get softer ones??

Its very easy to hand lay, and its possible to find material thst soft and good to work with.

Hey there guys just one last question.

I managed to get some clear polyester gelcoat, well actually it was given to me for free buy a friend at a body shop that had no use for it.

Anyways I was wondering would I be able to use this for some carbon hand lay up? What I was thinking was spray a couple of coats of this clear gelcoat onto the mold then lay up the carbon fibre onto it after it has dried.

Would I be able to use polyester resin with the carbon fibre? Or would I have to use epoxy resin?? How about if I was using it with this e-glass material, would be I be able to use polyester with e-glass or do I have to use epoxy?

Cheers

that’s how most people do parts they want to look nice.

Gelcoat, let it B stage, then lay in the carbon while still slightly tacky, then resin it all up!

Check to see if it has surfacing agent in this clear PER. If it is surfboard PER, then it will and you will have to only use that resin for final top coatings.

Just in case I didnt make my self clear, I will be doing this in terms of hand lay up with rollers etc… This is ok right? And do I HAVE to use epoxy to lay up the carbon after the gelcoat or can I use polyester?

And yeah just checked the clear, its got surfacing agent

you’ll want your resins to be homogeneous (polyester with polyester, epoxy with epoxy, etc.) most times. However, if not, make sure they’re compatible.

Epoxy + polyester is usually a no-no.

Where can i get coloured E Glass in the UK?

Will this be able to be used with Infusion Resin?

Thanks

Thanks for the info! I was always under the impression that carbon fibre should only be used with epoxy resins.

Thanks alot for the heads up, I might have to give it a try soon!

I received a sample pack of the fabric some time ago, I just never got around to testing it. I will lay it up tomorrow and post a pic.

Looking at the fabric, I dont think it will look very good. Well not what I’m looking for anyway. Have to see…
