Sanding question.

First off my project is with a console piece laminated in CF. When sanding in between layers is it necessary to go to the finer grits(1000, 1500, etc.)? The resin I have is self leveling. Does that matter? Will it fill the scratches if I use just 440 grit wet? Sorry for the noob question but I’m still learning composites. Also where can you go to buy finer grit sandpaper without going online? I’ve been to Wal-Mart and Lowe’s(which have the most variety) but they didn’t have any grit that high. :frowning:

-This is an awesome forum, I’ve read about every topic in here and have learned quite a bit.

Hey Oki_boy,

You don’t need to go any finer than 400. In fact sometimes I just rough it up with 220 or even 150 slightly. If you apply the next coat before the previous one completely cure then you don’t even need to sand.

You can only get high grits sandpaper at automotive supply stores like Kragen, AutoZone, Pepsboy etc. I get mine from a local auto body shop supplier.

Good luck

Thanks!

Are you from Okinawa?

My mom is Okinawan. I was born over there and spent about 6 yrs total there. Thats funny cause most people ask if I’m from Oklahoma.

oklahoma

I spent 6 years in the military so I’ve done my fair share of traveling. I spent 2 years in Okinawa. Great place, can’t wait to get back.

I’m an EMT in the Air Force. Trying to get the hell out of NM and go there.

awesome, good luck to you. Kadena air force base is pretty nice duty station.

Thats where I’m trying to get. Moms side of the family is still there.

Back to topic: I’m only supposed to sand in one direction for the final coat or does it matter in between coats?

it is not essential to sand in one direction but that’s how some prefer to do it. Sanding in one direction then the next is supposed to prevent low spots. I really haven’t seen a noticeable difference and I just sand in circles.

It’s better to go x-cross. It gets the scratches out easier.

yeah that is what I do in an x
