OSSA fiberglass tank help

I’m having a problem with my old OSSA fiberglass gas tanks. The new additives in the fuel are attacking the old OSSA fiberglass gas tank.
My question is could i use a coating of Epoxy resin to line the inside of the glass tank? Will there be a bond issue?
Or is there another method to save the old OSSA gas tanks? Caswell sealer isn’t working…

Mike

Gees, I havn’t heard that motorcycle name in a few decades…but that dates me then…

You will need to acid (?) etch the inside on the tank as with so many years of running pre-mix in your tank, there will be oil residue in there.

Use an epoxy resin that is sutible with gasoline and such. Maybe a Renu gas tank shop can do it for you best and cheapest. (left overs from a car tank job…?)

I make motorcycle fuel tanks, and would say the major problem with sealing an old tank is getting the epoxy sealing resin to bond to the inside of the tank.

Its possible to roughen the inside a little by putting a few nuts and bolts inside, and vigourously shaking around and then very carefully cleaning out with solvent. But the only way you are going to sure of 100% sucessful repair is to cut the bottom of the tank out, and sand the surface with P40 grit.

OSSA fuel tanks are still available new though, so probably best to try sealing with epoxy, and if that fails buy a new one.

Who is selling new OSSA tanks?
This is a 350 Ossa Mountaineer. 1 of 24 i have…

an easier option would be to have it professionally line on the inside with a makeshift bladder, these are very durable and reliable. Call around and see who does this in your area.

Ossa MAR tanks are sold here in the UK by Sammy Miller motorcycles.

Not sure about enduro tanks, but if you have 24 of these bikes, then might be worth making a mould and producing some tanks, if you cant source new ones from Spain.
