Of the 3...

Alright, so I need some help pointing me in the right direction of what type of fabric to use.

So far I picked 3 different kinds out of the pack I have, and it was based on weight.

The first one was 3k Uni-Carbon w/ S-glass fabric
It weighed in at 140grams/sq/meter or 4.1oz/sq/yard
Its a plain weave at $23.88/yard or $167.28 for 1 roll.

The second one was 100% Carbon Fabric 3k x 3k
It weighed in at 162g/sq/meter or 4.8oz/sq/yard.
Its also a plain weave at $16.73/yard or $127.10 for 1 roll.

The final one was 100% Kevlar
It weighed in at 170g/sq/meter or 5.0oz/sq/yard.
Its a 4-Harness Satin weave at $18.78/yard or $136.20 for 1 roll.

Keep in mind I will practice my initial things with fiberglass. These fabrics will be making body panels (i.e. fender, trunk, hood, etc) basicly anything that I dont need an autoclave for.

(Evan or Bill) What would I need (#of yards or rolls) to do something such as a fender that will be really strong. Looks are not an issue, as it will be painted. Cost and strength are my biggest quarrals.

There are also about 15 or so other types of fabric here, if of any not in the 3 above, would you reccomend?

also forgot to add, I will at most have 150 or so to work with for the next month or two. This will have to cover the cost of the fabric, the cutting fee, the shipping, epoxy/resin, brushes, and clear coat…

That’s a pretty tight budget so I would hold off on it for now and save up until your budget is a wee bit higher.

Other than that I would go with the second choice (3Kx3K 4.8oz plain weave). Keep in mind that a roll is 100 yards and not 10 yards. Then again I have not purchased from carb so I don’t know if they carry a 10-yard roll.

Good luck and sorry I took so long. I was pretty much stuck watching the kid all weekend because my wife wanted the weekend off.

So I take it I would need an entire roll? or more?

You definately won’t need the whole roll. I’m just saying that normally a roll has 100 yards.

oh ok well 127 something for one roll of the 3k x 3k, I think I can cover that (well after Im done fixing the car, stupid valves :frowning: ) Im gonna try to look for the epoxy resin tomorrow or wednesday. Maybe make something with my little samples  Is there a specific (model I guess) epoxy resin from West System I should look for to go with each specific fabric?

The resin is the same for West System. The different hardeners are for different cure time. I think the medium hardnener which is what you should go for is the 105.
