mold release on bondo

Can mold release wax be applied directly onto bondo, will fg release from it?
I need to make a mold of a part to replicate it in fg, but don’t need a smooth finish on the surface of the replica. So I want to avoid having to primer/paint/sand/wax as I would normally do.

I have sections of bondo on the original part to cover imperfections, sanded dead smooth. Will release wax work on it?

Cheers, toby

I’ve had bad luck doing that and I just rattle can spray paint it and let it set outside in the sun for a day. My luck is the Bondo (which is PER with additives) crosslinks with the PER lay up and chunks comes off when you demold.

i also have had bad luck trying to wax over mud but i have made it work by using a heat gun to mealt the wax over the mud

Rattle can laquer (enamel is a bad plan for frp- it just doesn’t release it seems) helps.

I have had decent luck laying up over bondo by using meguiar’s liquid wax and pva. You need more coats with liquid wax though, so by the time you add the extra coats and spray the pva, you could laquer, polish, and use a good hard wax. But I think maybe liquid wax fills the pores in the bondo better.

cheers guys, I think it makes more sense to primer/paint the thing. Seems like there’s enough risk involved in leaving it as bondo to make it worthwhile painting first.

Yes, the best would be something like Duratec top coat or catyslisted primer.
