Inficon Whisper VS. Accutrak VPE Ultrasonic Leak Detector

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has experience with these leak detectors. I bought the Inficon Whisper but it doesn’t work well at all. The only leaks it detects are ones I can hear without using the detector. I am trying to return the unit but the company is suggesting the Accutrak VPE. I don’t know if I should give it a try, or if I should just return it and not use a leak detector.

How many people on here use a leak detector? Is it needed to get a perfect vacuum for infusing?

Time permitting, I will do a side-to-side test of leak detectors tomorrow.

Victims are the:
Inficon Whisper
Accutrac VPE
Sontech (expensive one)
and time permitting, also another solution, which is not cheap either, but IS promising.

Please keep in mind that I also have to count stock in a warehouse, managed by a completely stressed-out warehouse technician, who made a complete mess. The technician is kicked out, 2 new ones brought in, but they have no clue either, and I cannot blame them. So they do need some guidance.

Leaks I am planning to test:

-fiber under sealant tape
-pinch in bag
-leaky connector
-overlapped sealant tape not pressed down hard enough

Any more suggestions?

Wow that would be great, I am interested in seeing the results!

I have not had the opportunity of testing all 3. The warehouse was messed up more than I hoped. Today the last day of cleaning out.

Regarding your your leaks I to have had problems trying to source leaks when using flange,I’ve just enveloped a wing mirror has held perfect vaccum over night,I think your bridging is caused by to much material on flange, you need to trim to the edge off part, carbon tensile strengh is high,so once vacuumed no matter how hard you try to push it won’t happen, make sure as you pull vac down, then you should press into corners before full vaccum applied.

Thank you! That is good advise. I have ordered some more materials and have a good feeling about my next attempt. I am also hoping the vacuum bagging film I am getting is a little better or at least has been handled better. The stuff I have been using was shipped to be folded up which could have caused damage.

I infused part,I degassed resin, loads of air in there was surprised how much, only problem I had was resin exothermed after 25 minutes, should have been 1 hour next time have to use different hardener, the resin was crystal clear when infusing,we will see in the morning when demoulding part.

Any chance to have this test done?

I have this…it’s work, but it doesn’t do miracles

Is it worth buying or not? I can hear some leaks without any instrument, but does this helps to hear beyond the audible range?

yes, it’s help to hear beyond the audible range. I tried before this with a tube near my ear, then with a stethoscope.
Trutrack is more sensitive, but sometimes I can’t find leaks even with this.
I found this used on “subito.it” and pay 100€ for 2 trutrack. I don’t know how much does it cost new.
However, it’s work, but this is a cheap instrumet, far to a professional instrumet. You have to try slowly the leaks
