Hollow structural parts

Hi guys,

Im looking for some useful info about making hollow structural parts on high level. Have you found something interesting? Im looking for info of this kind few years now. I always find some ,piece, of the puzzle, but never whole process. If you have something, link, pdf etc. please drop me few words here or PM. Thanks

We talking simple stuff, or complex stuff like tubes, and boxes?

I need informations about complex tubes, boxes etc, moulding with two (or more) part moulds (closed). Im working on my next CF bicycle frame and I want to build it high level.

I learned a little about inflatable mandrels in composite school. Not enough to build one though. I’m researching this because I need to build some wind turbine blades. I’ll post what I find out.

Do some reading on Aquacore. Its a desolvable plaster like material (that you use as a male mold) that once the laminate has cured you can wash the mandrel/mold away with water. Its around $100 for five gallons (IIRC).

Thats the first product I would look at for producting hollow seamless complex shapes.

Yeha, aquacore. It is machineable and cookable if you are using pre-preg.
I would think for the lightest weight, and simplest idea, is foamcore of sorts.

Maybe, empty tubes, and the joint areas are foam/aquacore, as…connectors almost.

I hnow Aquacore stuff, its very amazing material. But I need smooth outher surface, so the better way will be using moulds (bladder moulding ). I will try to find more informations… thanks guys.

2Werksberg: Perfect tutorial. Thanks

Sad but true man…if you don’t wanna bladder mold, you have to use shrink tubing, or vac bag it with tubular bags…and if you have to sand and add more resin later on for cosmetic purposes…big deal! Every company out there uses a ton of resin after the fact to get ‘the look’ out of their frames.

Also look in our materials listing for Bondline Products as they have a Video (I’ll be trying to get permission to upload it to my PPV section someday) and make the bladders to your specs.

or you could wrap the aqua core and infuse the carbon in a 2 part or more mold Thus you have a clear carbon part with a cored center.

2Werksberg: Those bladers are one of the best way for me. I read on frameforum that its posible to make my own bladders with special 2 part catalyzed molding silicone (GI1000 by Silicones Inc.). Maybe I will try it too.
You wrote that there is a video, but I cant find it on their page.
2doogie48084: Im also going to experiment with infusion. I have some ideas for complex parts.
OMG so many things to try/learn, but not enough time :frowning:
Thanks guys…
