Fibreglass wings - How many layers

Hi, i have been looking at how to do a mold and i have 2 fairly simple car wings to try (and maybe door skins), the info and advice i have for the mold is first layer of 300g F/G over the gelcoat, then 3 layers of 450g F/G, let it cure then another 3 layers of 450g F/G

but my main question is how many layers and what grade/s for making the wings (and doors skins) ? i have F/G car parts on another car that i can check the thickness but would be great help if i can find out the number/pattern of the layers

they dont need to be the best as there only for my own track cars and i dont fancy paying out again for company’s to do them and for when the day comes i wreck a few panels :embarrassed:

I hate to be a negative nancy butid if I were you I’d wait a while before making any wings. There is allot of information that needs to be learned to make a wing right. Not only that, the materials from what I’ve herd from season experts are expensive and have to be chosen properly. Imagine how much pressure and force is applied upon a wing. There are lots of risks and liabilities in making products such as a wing.

Hi john,

not sure if you think i mean a rear wing/spoiler or front wheel arch panel i should of been more clear sorry its just front wheel arch panels we call them wings in the UK, there nothing complicated or structural and almost like a slightly curved flat sheet with couple of bolts, the standard panels are extremely thin (not even 1mm) and bad for rust/corrosion not helped by living next to the sea, the F/G panels i had made for another track car are lighter and slightly thicker than the steel.

Ahh ok. My mistake :(. If you wanted to stick to fiberglass, then you should stick to fiberglass cloth and infuse the parts. I hope somebody can back me up if I’m giving you good advice, but if you made the wings out of three - four layers of 10-12oz cloth I think you’d be in good shape. I doubt thicnkess should be a problem. Four layers of 10oz will be about 1.3 - 1.7 mm thick. You can try three layers and you might get it under 1mm. Make sure to criss cross the fabric.
