I use single component lacquers and 2K urethanes depending on the demands and expectations of the structure. Not all paint-resin combinations work well. Some will end up tacky, soft, or foggy. Dupli-color Paint shop clear, for example, is hazy with Adtech 820, pefectly clear and hard with MGS L285, and tacky with USC 635. 2K paints are typically less finicky. I use PPG Deltron DC3000 for clean and Deltron Single Stage 2K for color. Klass Kote epoxy paint works well with most resins but doesn’t have good releases with semi-permanents on certain mold surface coats.

Adam, ouch that DC3000 is pricey. Re: Klass Kote… They seem to have epoxy paint, and urethanes. Do you mean Klass Kote Epoxy Clear #40, or do you mean Klass Kote Urethane Clear?

But now I have a stupid question… If I’m possibly putting epoxy into the mold, why not just use my same infusion epoxy? Then infuse it the next day, or is that the point, it eats a day?

I only used Klass Kote colored epoxy paint. I’ve never tried the clear or know how it performs in respect to UV.

I pulled my first test part using a 2k clear coat urethane this morning. Aside from known scratches and goobers in this old test mold, the part is absolutely perfect! Thank you Adam!!! For the first time I feel some competence in what I’m doing! :D:D

I spray clear coats into molds every working day of my life. All kinds to paints too. My shop never-ever paints anything after demolding…unless we mess something up. I’ve never had an adhesion issue with epoxy. I’ve done oodles of testing to confirm the bond. The bond is better than spraying it on after cure…at least with the products that I use. I cure PPG Deltron DC3000 urethane in 15 minutes with an IR lamp after flash.

It looks like this. You should use caution as the mold surface can get up to 175*F.

Honestly, I’m not sure. I got mine used from a local paint shop. Either they were going out of business or were upgrading…I can’t remember.

At what point can you start an infusion after the clear is sprayed into the mold? Does it have to be tacky or can it be fully cured? If fully cured, do you need to scuff up the clear so the resin can bite in ?

I like to the let the paint set up pretty hard. I’ve never had bonding issues…but I use epoxies. I cannot comment on how PE or VE stick to cured 2K clears.

2K = 2 pack, 2 component, as in: base material + hardener.

hahaha duh. what brands do you guys recommend for the 2k urethane? (can this be brushed on?) I will be using it for car parts so I’m looking for something with good UV protection… ive heard deltron 3000 thrown around in various threads… anything else i can get a local auto store?

I have been in the auto industry for years and am just getting into the carbon/epoxy world…
so I get all the ppg light coats tack off stuff…

What kind of mold release are people using with the 3000 clear and has anyone tried DCC concept in the mold…

I used a frekote the first time and it fisheyed like crazy… I didn’t mist it and let tack enough I guess…

I have tried a few different mold releases in the sprayon line like the s00315 urethane and styrene silicone mold release…

Has anyone tried a fisheye eliminator in the clear… It has been years since I have had it around and I might not be the best additive…
