CSM as a filler reinforcement?

Is anyone using chopped strand mat in their laminate behind carbon fiber 2x2 twill?

I am trying this today, along with some 10oz 2x2 twill fiberglass right behind the 2x2 twill carbon fiber. Then as the last layer into the mold i’m going to use another layer of 2x2 twill fiberglass. I’m doing this to achieve a total thickness of around 1/8 inch.

No way. CSM and CF in the same part just don’t go together.
Use woven glass if you have to, or a core or laminate bulker.

I dont know if I would agree with that. I see no problem as long as he uses poly or vinylester. I have combined the two before without any problems. the best thing you can do is make a small test panel simulating the laminate you want to do.

*I take back what I said, Didnt relize he was infusing, thought he was doing open mold. My bad

Like you said. It will work under certain conditions.

Is it ideal though? Probably not.

Some continuous strand mat would be a better option. The chopped strands disrupt resin flow.

yeah, I decided not to use CSM, I’ll use 7 layers of 10oz 2x2 twill fiberglass instead.

could you please take pics of how it infuses if it’s not a hassle, I’d be curious to see how well the resin flows…
Thanks

RC51, it’s really small part, about 8"x 5". If i have sufficient time, this being my first attempt at infusion, I will take a couple pictures and upload them.

I’m not sure how long it will take to infuse. I’m using a low viscosity epoxy resin. Good thing someone said don’t use CSM with epoxy   I’m doing a sandwhich of 6oz c/f 2x2 twill,5 layers of 10oz twill f/g 0,+45,90,-45, 0, followed by a last layer of 6oz c/f 2x2 twill. I’m using the AeroMarine Products epoxy.
