Cabosil / Tooling Resin...and Mold Layers.

i have 5 layers of chopped mat down (3 layers .75 oz, 2 layers 1.5 oz). going to put down maybe another layer of 1.5 oz mat, then for sure 2 layers of 12oz biax.

i am going to add wood bracing / a frame to the mold when done with the layers of glass. would a mix of cabosil and tooling resin be good for this?

also, i am working solo and i have a STUPID amount of time into laying down chopped mat layers on this mold. what is the fastest / best method for this? or is this not a fast process? any tips are appreciated.

Roo what is your layup going to be?

Definately pretty eager to hear what people have to say about your mold too.

i have some ideas, but nothing firm…

you in the PWC world?

I have no idea what that means so probably not lol.

Kayakdude is into HPWC (Human powered watercraft) :stuck_out_tongue: PWC stands for powered watercraft like Roo’s jetski.

Roo - “Stupid amount of time” Sorry for laughing but I know what you mean. I like to use continuous strand matt so I can infuse my mold instead of using brushes and rollers. It can cost you more money because of the added materials, but having your mold done in 15min is great.

wait wait wait. If you are going to infuse the mold then why not just go straight to the carbon? (besides that it would be slightly larger then its supposed to be in this case.

very nice work
I’ve used cabosil to bed stiffeners, worked fine
i hear ya about doing it by yourself. I cut a bunch of large mat sections and wet them out on a plywood table, then put the wet side down facing the mold and roll it out

that is exactly right - part would be bigger then the original. no good.

i was thinking about having a bucket full of resin, soak the mat then put down… what ya think? heh

i am not quite that advance for infusion yet… maybe in a future chapter

a little more detail on my post
I have a sheet of 3/4" OSB plywood 4x4’ that I reuse over and over to wet out the chopped strand mat.
next to it is the stack of pre cut mat. lay a few pieces of mat on the board. Have a bucket of resin ready and wet out the top surface. It does not need to be heavy wet soaked all the way thru. pick up and lay down the sheet of mat wet side tward the mold, roll it out (ribbed/ring roller) until the resin comes thru the back side wet. that way I don’t get to much resin build up. sometimes it get real wet and I will throw on a piece of dry mat and roll to soak up excess.
In tight corners I will use some high 5 mixed w/gelcoat and dab it on with a brush. I go thru a lot of acetone doing molds for clean up during and after the lay up. your mold looks really good.

Rotorage can you tell us more about infusing a mold? I have never heard of this before. I thought that you prettymuch had to hand-lay the mold to be able to pull a vaccum.

Impressive job so far!

Just make sure you heat cure that mold before it sees any layups! You do not want your first part sticking and ruining all that hard work!

Hey Roo, great work!! Looking forward to the flipside “top deck” adventure.

Roo, nice work, would like to see some more pics of the mold and it s progress. Is your first hull going to be glass or carbon?
