Bleeder / Breather cloth

I will be vacuum bagging for my first time coming up pretty quick here.

I will be using Peel Ply (need secondary bonding surface), Release Film, Bleeder, then the Vacuum Bag itself.

This might be another basic question from me, but I figure it will help me and others that lurk

My question is regarding the Bleeder / Breather cloth - can/should I use two layers for fear I might use to much Epoxy in the layup of the part or is this not a good idea?

Thanks all for your time,
-Andrew

you can, whats the weight of your breather? I wouldnt go over a total of 10oz. I would recommend 7oz breather.

I haven’t actually purchased my material yet, but I was going to be buying the bulk of my materials from US Composites:

4oz Bleeder/Breather is what they have listed.

you can stack two layers of that together. unless your very good at controlling your resin, or you only have a couple layers of laminate your 4oz will get too saturated. It will be cheaper buying 7oz. I would recommend you purchase material from northern fiberglass(www.nfgsales.com) as they are much better supplier IMO.

I am always open to trying new company’s - however no pricing posted on there site?

Or am I missing something…?

Thanks Hojo for responding.

Most suppliers do not post pricing. Give them a call, I think your territory rep would be John Rude.

where can i buy some treated release fabric?some call it teflon coated.the only source i have heard of is the (engineering guy) the website didnt have any details on the release fabrics.

For breather fabric material, I go to my local fabric store and buy the polyester batting fabric. The store carries lots of different styles and weights to choose from. Example…http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog/category.jsp?_DARGS=/joann/catalog/narrowselection.jsp.narrowresults1

thanks for the link.from looking at the different options.600004 in srb (super release blue)is what im after.that is fine texture.i have a sample here and it is also blue.

yea, thats all it is.i dont know why i ship the stuff in.its the same thing that is used for coat filling.next time im going to go to the local fabric warehouse to get it.

Warm Company. 100 yards = $120. they have 5oz, 7oz, and 10oz. I purchased the 10oz… it works well for vacuum bagging fiberglass mat lay ups, as those always tend to be resin rich and the 10oz really helps soak up plenty excess resin.

I was going to get some 5oz, but maybe now i’ll switch that to 7.
10 is really thick, about 3/16"

Something to watch - that material has a melting fiber in it. Most of those fibers activate at a relatively low temp - ~120F. You can hit this is you use a hair dryer to heat the part to quicken the gelling. Also, becuase the product is heat set and calendared, it will not breath as well as a non heat set and calendared product.
