Anyone Try

putting Epoxy Surface coat , let it tack up and then add PER to see if that sticks? i really like the visc. level of PER , goes through the csm very well.

It was reported on here that Epoxy will bind to PER but PER will not bind to Epoxy.

well that i have a good chance that the epoxy surface coat will bond if its still tacky i take it?

Epoxy will stick to just about anything, but bonds between poly and epoxy can be very hit and miss, and presence of epoxy can mean poly will hot fully cure.

I was watching one of the videos on the MAS Epoxy website. The guy was doing a boat hull repair using epoxy and f/g cloth. I have to asume, or would think, that boat hulls are made of PER? maybe some mfg’s are using VER or Epoxy for higher end, expensive boats?

Almost all production boats are PER nowadays. VER is hydroscopic and is/was the cause of most boat hulls blistering (by a process they call but actually isn’t Osmosis). Epoxy is usually used in one-off boat building methods by custom builders. They will use a variety of processes from cold hand lay up to infusion. The higher cost is harder to justify in production environments over PER’s. Infusion has dealt with the noxious fumes & VOC’s issue with PER’s.

With FB boat repairs epoxy bonds best with any substrate wheter it’s PER or other. PER, as I’m told, doesn’t bond well to cured epoxy.

I was wondering the same thing today…I guess you’ll just have to try it out.

So, if PER does not bind to epoxy, can the PER coat be peeled/pried off? At what point does it release? Age, heat, vibration, etc?

Presence of epoxy can in some cases prevent full cure of poly resin layer closest to epoxy surface, but this effect does not occur in all cases.

If its a non critical application best thing is to try out on a small test piece, and see what happens.

i guess ill be the first to try this =) ill report soon

Surely it would be far easier to spray something like Duratec poly surface coat, and lay up over that woth poly resin system?

Duratec is UV stable, has a very good finish, and cures a lot faster than epoxy, so seems to me ideal if you are looking for a clear surface coat, without any of the problems of using epoxy.
