We accept donated supplies (the companies will get a tax deduction form from us which you set the value, even old materials that aren’t good enough for their use, but is still usable for us to teach with) to use in the classroom and sometimes a large manufacturer may buy out a competitor and donate a ton of supplies of a brand that they aren’t a dealer for.
With Arnold’s stealing from school’s budgets, the last few years I recieved less than $400.00 per YEAR to buy supplies, replacement tools and equipment! How much can you buy with $400.00 to train 30 to 50 students with for a whole school year?
I pull a lot out of my own wallet (there’s been many years of me spending $1,500.00 +) to give my students the best Plastics education that I can. Even when I only get paid for 7 hours a week (actual class time) and spending anywhere’s up to 20 hours a week looking for donations, picking them up, fixing equipment, making classroom improvements (the classroom has not been painted in over 13 years an guess who is doing it on the weekends? Myself and a few adults students) and other maintenance.
When I do get excess donated supplies, I keep the most that I can use in the classroom, give some to the adult students that I think will use it to maybe start their own business or a side job to better themselves and maybe sell some on E-Bay to buy some fresh supplies or equipment.
We had like maybe 10 rolls of a HD tooling Kevlar cloth laying around in a storage area for maybe 6 years and I had the students learn how to cut (I always get a mouthie HS student to get a pair of std. scissors to try an cut it…wink, wink…) it properly, fold and package it. I did sell them on E-Bay and was able to buy a Bondline RVBS to use in the classroom and many other tools and stuff too.
I also race at Irwindale Speedway (and my business make automotive street & racing products too) and being a racer, I might bend a few rules to better my student’s experiences & hopefully a career in the Composite / Plastics industry.
Why do I do all this instead of just baby sitting the class like others do? I get a great feeling when someone doesn’t think they can do something and after I show them, they do it and I can see it in their eyes!
I get students (both High School and adults too) that never have had a tool in their hands…what is wrong with this education system? They think everyone is to go to college, but what good is that if they have zero knowledge of common tools, knowledge of how things are made, put together and work!
Ok BigmansM, I’m not getting down on you but just wanted you know. TopElement was a student from a couple of years ago before I got the vacuum baging and high end composites going full steam in the classroom, but he lives in Pasadena and we are near Knott’s. It is a long drive for him. I told him about this site after he asked about buying some supplies from the classroom, but I didn’t think he would post about stuff gathering dust in the classroom…
If your company does have any excess usable supplies, please contact me…
