So I’m used to making my mold patterns off of MDF that is machined into shape, and then sealed with duratec products (their grey primer and then their vinylester high gloss top coat).
easy composites recently started selling a product that looks ridiculously easy to use - it’s essentially a wipe on sealer for foam tooling boards that eventually builds into a high gloss surface coat layer that you can then release and pull molds or parts off of. This isn’t a microporosity sealer in the way that Frekote FMS is - this is a high build sealer that is still single component and can be applied with ease. I recommend checking out their latest video because i really was shocked when i saw it in action.
I’ve had some difficulty trying to find the actual product that they are reselling. The closest I got is a company call Necumer that sells a product called Necuron v7. they are based out of Germany, and it appears that they don’t have a distributor of that specific product in the US.
ANYWAY enough background info… my question is: has anyone ever made a part off of a wood that was sealed with your typical furniture grade wood polyurethane coating? From my random furniture building fun I’ve been able to get pretty high gloss finishes with random brands from Home Depot, and compared to our world, this stuff is incredibly cheap. I was wondering if it would be possible to mill a part out of MDF and then use wood single component PU to seal it and create a surface that can be treated with a releasing agent. Anyone have any experience with this?
