hand laid with plain weave, and a bit of paint which i hope gets TET’s aprovement
How did you get the checkered pattern in the bottom photos? Also did you overlay your current cover or make a new one?
All those pieces look great and I’m now thinking about doing that with some scrap I have!
Good job, looks nice!
No i made a mold as u see in the top pic, you can see ther fully carbon no glassfibre.
Well i am a painter by trade so i masked up the covers, i thought it would go well with plain weave.
i flatted with 600, masked up, painted the covers and flicked the paint out so it faded. then clear coated, i am then going to flatt with 1500 and re clear for final finish, i am by far no means good with carbon yet but with a paint gun, yer im up there!!
takes alot of masking but i am also doing my rocker cover (valve cover for the u.s. guys) in digi cammo now that is a ball ache!!!
TET i see when people creat carbon fibre parts you always say looks better in body color, so geting a thumbs up from u means alot.
One other question I have is how do you avoid gelcoat distortion. Tet mentioned in another thread that gel coats don’t always go on evenly which will make the carbon look wavy.
i didnt use gelcoat ont these i used polyester resin and brushed that in instead
looks good brainstorm.
Was that your first piece? looks like it wasnt vac bagged(looking at the back side in the top pics).
Looks nice tho
Good job
looks good, dig the paint job!
yes matvd first proper go at carbon. and correct it was a wet lay up.
thanks hojo like to be diff.
looks great, I really like the paint scheme
We sprayed some clear gel coat yesterday and today… went down nice and even. the hvlp gun (1.7 mm nozle) fan was adjusted to a round pattern 3" width… just sprayed it on evenly and kept the gun moving across the mold at a steady speed. Also thinned the gel coat with 10% acetone.
 10% thinning is A LOT! 5% max is recommended by most mfg’s, and usually 3% should work.
If you’re thinning that much, the gelcoat is being ruined and means the wrong equipment is used!
well done ,well done.
