Whats your process for laminating?

I have a part that I don’t want to spend the time or money to make a mold of (mud guard for a mini supermoto), but I think for minimal effort I can clean the part up and do a lamination.

I wanted to see what the process people on tho board use for laminating. The way I plan to do it is to first, clean up the part and scuff with 80 grit sand paper. Second, I would brush on an epoxy resin and let it get tacky, once tacky I will apply a layer of carbon fiber. After the carbon is in place I would brush on an additional layer of resin. After it has cured I would sand and polish.

Is that the correct method? I have also seen people talking about vacuum bagging a lamination. What is the process for this? Do you apply a layer of peel ply and then put the whole part in a bag and pull vac? What kind of surface finish will this leave?

Thanks in advance!

Daniel

Vaccum bag laminating is wet fabric out in mould adding additional layers wet out until desired amount of reinforcement is put down, then add peel ply or just release film, peel ply is handy if secondary bonding is required especially useful if multiple part are to be joined, then breather fabric pull vaccum again checking for bridging pushing into tight areas, let part cure, then de mould.

For lamination or “over-lay”, yes that is the way to do it, few people bag an over-lay due to the pressure and warping or twisting the part, hence why a mould is the way to go. A mud-guard sounds plastic and pliable, vacuum bagging it may make it warp.

Just over-lay it as you have described it above, do your best to add the resin as smooth and neat as possible, reduces the post sanding aspect.
