what material to use?

Which material is easier for wet layup? FG cloth(satin weave vs plain weave)? or strand mat? and also what oz.?

I used 8oz satin weave for wet layup and had pretty bad experience with it. Resin was really hard to wet out and trap bubbles really easy and hard to get it out, and also its really hard to drag in the mold.

Any one had any good experience with wet layup? if so what material did you use?

Lay up the material in the mold before wetting it out.

Sounds like you used too much MEKP or took too long stirring it before applying it.

what kind of cloth is better for doing this this applicantion?

I like plain weave. Its pliable and easily worked out.

The liter the OZ rating the easier to form and wet out, but more layers…

With satin you need to use a REALLY small radius aluminum roller to get the bubbles out. The weave is so tight on satin that the only way I have found to get air out of it is to role them off to the side instead of trying to force the air throuh the weave.

If your using satin with vinyl or poly then thats goind to be a nasty job no matter what.

…unless you thin the resin out with styrene.

I am trying to wet layup carbon fiber, can I spray 3m 77 adhensive in the mold first and lay carbon fiber in the mold so it hold in place, then wet out carbon fiber? OR any other method I can do?

If youre doing carbon you should either have a gelcoat or an epoxy surface coat.

Brush or spray the outer layer on, let get tacky or “B” staged (meaning its sticky but firm aka not a liquid anymore) and it should hold the carbon down for you when you lay it in and tamp it into the surface coat. (whatever it is made from) then you dont have to use any glue for anything. You just lightly wet up the carbon and lay in your layer of glass and repeat…

I only have polyester resin now, can I use it for surface coat instead of epoxy?

BTW what are the differences between peel ply and release film(application)for vacuum bagging?

Sorry I have too many questions as you can tell I am a newbie.

Thanks for the help.

Is your PER lamination or gel coat resin?

So far as I know, peel ply is a bit more like regular cloth (nylon) and release film is like pantyhose (also nylon) one just obviously is more adept at pulling excess resin off the surface I use peelply only…

Per doesnt stick to most plastic films for bagging…Ive seen people use trash can bags for bagging. I wouldnt do it but when youre in a pinch you do what you have to.

I use per gel coat…if youre using general purpose PER resin (the most common resin youll find) it should be fine for a surface coat.

I think its called Thixotropic or something like that. Meaning it will try to cling to vertical walls and not pool too badly.

Take your time if you dont have a spray gun and gelcoat. Just brush a light layer on, let it B stage and maybe do another layer and let it B stage then lay in your cloth.

If you have gelcoat its easy. It doesnt pool too badly at all.

I am using per tooling resin for the layup, I do have per gel coat but it’s black, therefor I cannot use it for the surface coat (for the carbon fiber look).

When I apply first coat for the surface coat in the mold, do I need to cover the mold completely with resin with no mold surface expose to air?
Or just a little enough for the carbon fiber to stick in the mold(will that trap air bubble?).

Thank you

Release film is more like a perferated sheet of saran wrap, but less stretchy than saran wrap.

What surface coat do you guys use for epoxy?

What percentage do you use? And thats for epoxy right?

I used 5% Acetone on one layup today (I realize its not the best thinner). Kind of an “If Im going to bag wrong, Im gonna be good at bagging wrong” type thing.

It worked well. It got most of the serious voids out of the layup. What I mean by bagging wrong is…7 layers wetted and bagged at once on a square part with several super small radius/fillets on it, each layer is one sqaure yard, and were using fast hardner. It wasnt my idea, and, I dont recommend it to anybody…nothing like the resin getting hot before the bag is even on it.

most people I know using epoxy use it as the surface coat.

Or they use clear per gelcoat as the epoxy sticks to it anyways.

anyone know this question?

The clear epoxy is replacing the polyester gelcoat.
Use it just as you would the gel coat.
That is, apply thicker and lte it go tacky.

Cheers buddy.

Why dont you guys use Duratec clear as a surface coat in the mold, in the States you get it for half the price i pay for it here. I mean its easy to spray, very high gloss, and it must have some thixophropic qualities as it doesnt pool if your trigger fingers light. I`ve tried various other materials but to be honest the Duratec is the best, well at least for me it is.

Is it a resin or a paint?
