wet sanding mold (what direction?)

So i’m new to wet sanding/buffing and im having a hard time getting rid of the sandpaper strokes. I was previously doing it in one direction, (left to right) then i spoke to the tech at US Composites and he told me to sand in a circle… others are telling me 0* then 10-30*, 0* then 90* or 0 90* then an X pattern… can someone shed some advice and clear this subject for me?:confused:

I always sand +/-45 degrees. Each grid another direction, so you can see it when there are courser marks still on the part.

Sand in circles and double you sanding time with each change to a finer grit. It also helps to use less pressure near the end of the grit cycle.

In general circles are best, but sometimes it is not avoidable to sand in strokes. Try to vary strokes as much as possible.

As for sanding time: get yourself a container of guide coat (black powder). Powdered on, it shows when you have sanded enough. For wetsanding it might not be sufficient, but a spray can of fast drying paint could also work. (just mist it over, then attack it with a heat gun ((low heat) to cure the stuff fast)

An old school boat fairer told me to go 4 stokes in 0 deg, 4 in 90, 4 in +45, 4 in -45 and repeat.

A bit of detergent in the water helps a lot when wet sanding.

thanks guys! the detergent helps a lot!

Just something else that I found works.
Sandpaper, polishing cream and detergent.
