waxing the plug

Just curius what wax you guys are using on your plugs? Everytime time i pull the plug its a pain to release. Im currenty using partall 2 with pva 10 over brand new automotive painted parts. hoods and bumpers is what i have been doing. seems like partall 2 is a pain to use and its hard to get a nice slick surface.

Semipermanent is the way to go.

Should pva still be used ?

Semi permanents are the way to go.

My pattern routine is

two pack paint finish plug (cut and polish)
cleaner
sealer (frekote)
release system (frekote)
Wax (TR 108)

And that’s it, no PVA.

has the paint been sticking when making the molds?

Fasta, you wax over your semiperm? Why?

Probably to prevent the gelcoat from fisheying.

I usually recommend the same: First a semi perm sealer, then a normal high temp wax over it. Works like a charm.

The wax makes things stick a little more (specifically TR 108) and helps to prevent any pre release/shrinkage issues with the initial mould skin layer.

The semi perm guarantees a safe release, the wax stops it coming off too easily.

Hi Fasta, as I see it, since the wax is adhered to the semipermanent layer I just do not see how can the wax prevent the prereleases the wax, being of antiadherent nature should not adhere to the semipermanent realase layer any stronger than the laminate.

And now a question: does the wax serve to the purpose of filling the microscratches left after the wet sanding/polishing of the mould ??

Or in another words, does the use of wax improve the external surface of the part ??

I believe the gel coat hangs on better to a wax finish than the frekote.

The wax will also help improve the finish but in my case this mostly just removing the streaking from the Frekote.

The downside is that the wax does transfer to the part…which may or may not be an issue.
