Has anyone ever used any of the automotive vinyl wraps for surfacing over a plug instead of other methods?
Anyone ever pulled a mold from that vinyl wrapped surface?
It could foreseeable be used over the entire plug including the flanges and provide a perfect joint to the flanges eliminating the need for filleting the gaps etc.

Yeh it’s no good without PVA if you are using an ester based tooling system, the styrene attacks the vinyl. Also no good with chemical release agent, the solvent also attacks the vinyl and dulls the finish.
Might be possible with wax and an epoxy tooling system, have never tried that myself.
We have pulled many splashes from wrapped car bonnets and wings to get profiles for custom styling. We go in with 4 coats of hard wax followed by a sprayed PVA application. Polyester and vinylester splashes and tooling released with no damage to either moulding or vehicle wrap.
We’ve also had a customer supplied mould that they had vinyl wrapped to cover surface imperfections. Same release method as above with no issues. Of course we carried out a small trial first to avoid any costly mistakes
You can mould off virtually anything if you’re using PVA, it is it’s own surface.
^Indeed… We took a mould off one of the outside walls of our building (brick and mortar) a while ago. The rain’s still trying to wash the PVA out the mortar on the wall. We have this area that looks like a newly built wall

I was hoping that I could use a semi perm on the vinyl. Frekote perhaps (I have on hand), but I have also been considering this one from HPtextiles http://shop.hp-textiles.com/shop/Release-Agents–Priming-Wax/Release-Agent/high-gloss-release-agent-HP-HGR5.html since it’s non-solvent based and likely “safer” for use indoors and friendlier to the vinyl perhaps.
I have done it and it worked fine.
I used some generic vinyl I had laying around to put a shiny surface on a wood CNC routed wing mold.
I used Frekote sealer and mold release on the vinyl with no problems.
The vinyl will not smooth out the surface very much, you could see the roughness of the wood through the vinyl.
I vacuum bagged the vinyl to get it to stick to the wood.
The parts released very easily from the mold.
