Well I’ve never used it. Been reading that it’s between poly and epoxy in terms of characteristics.
Amy suggestions on a few brands to research that are around 200tg and clear with a room temperature cure?

200F? Scott Bader Crystic VE671 has a Tg of 105 Celsius. Decent stuff, I don’t love it because it does shrink but I find if you can leave the part for a week or two before demoulding then that really helps. Good post-cure helps too. It prints badly though, I don’t think it’s great for cosmetic applications unless you’re topcoating.
I still prefer epoxy. But the vinyl has its uses.
I’m looking to do some lamination work so the print threw issue would be a problem.
I’ve used multiple epoxies and some blush. Also some I need to let cute and sand every layer which is a waste of time! I liked the west system so much since you could let things tack then put another coat right on top and repeat the steps until something needed to be sanded.
I figured vinyl Ester though is like poly where once it takes you can stick another layer on. I think ease of application and being able to bang some stuff out in a day or two is my goal with this.
What are you laminating? Print is only an issue if you are infusing, wet lay is rich enough for it to not be an issue.
I’m hoping to try a steering wheel. Like sections of one.
I actually think surfboard polyester resin like the silmar 249 is going to work. Although I tried it awhile ago I forget what it’s characteristics were like
It’s only got a Tg of 82? Not bad for a polyester, but it gets a lot hotter than that in a car here. You’d be better off with a regular laminating vinyl ester which are normally around 95 degrees.
Gotcha. Hmmmm I was on the phone earlier with a company. One said 165F TG. The other said 175F. The same company that said 175 was stating that was by itself with no reinforcement. Meaning it’s stronger when there’s fibers and can withstand higher temps???
I’m going to keep searching but yeah a vinyl Ester would be good. Maybe I’ll just use my infusion epoxy that’s rated at 180F and infuse the thing…
They were probably telling you the HDT, as that’s the temperature at which a solid block of the resin will deflect under load. Fibres would increase that value.
You can wet lay with infusion epoxy, you wouldn’t have to infuse it.
I just bought a quart of solarez uv cure. Will try it out and let you all know.
Try Derakane 8084. It is amber in color. I do not believe it is UV stable. We infuse with it all the time. If you purchase an un-promoted batch you have quite a bit of control over your gel times
