If vinyl ester is an esterized epoxy, and carbon fiber is only sized for epoxy, why doesn’t the VE bond to it well?
I often use Reichold VE for infusion and it bonds perfectly to Carbon Fiber.
Are you properly post curing your parts after room cure?
I’ve never done any carbon. Just glass. Gearing up to mess with it now.
Your question was posed as if you’d experianced issues.
Lol, no… I’ve just read all over this site that it is ok for cosmetic but not structural.
There are several sizings (coatings) which can be applied on carbon fiber. This is done by the fiber manufacturer. The coating acts as a lubricant during weaving, and improves the bond to resins.
Toray at least has different sizings, suitable for either polyester, vinylester or epoxy.
I would need to see if I can find a datasheet.
Here it is.
Thanks Herman, good stuff
Looks like #5 and F are Toray’s designated VER sizings. ( pointing out the obvious),lol.
My supplier carries F0E carbon for vinylester. Results seem better than with 50C
