Start with a compressor and vac generator. It’ll be a lot more versatile for other uses if you work on a car. And when you need to sand a plug you just through on a dual action sander and go to town. Pneumatic tools are the only way to go when working with composites. The dust eats electric tools for lunch. Then you can also use cutoff tools and grinders for trimming and finishing work.
I started out with a small dedicated pump, but I wish I had the versatility of a compressor when I started. It would have saved my some trouble. The only downside to having a compressor as your primary vac source is you can’t do finishing work with it while you’re bagging, or at least I wouldn’t. Rather wait than risk underfeeding the vacuum generator. Of course, when you get into the really big compressors, that’s not so much of an issue.
Of course, you’ll eventually want to buy a dedicated pump if you do enough work. Or there are plans out there on the net for making one out of fridge compressors on the cheap if you don’t mind wiring.
