vacumming

Do you have to have a mold in order to do vacuuming process? Or can you have a part and overlay and do vacuum?

I do the vacuuming around my home…oh, vacuum bagging…oops.:o

Yes, you can envelope bag and vacuum an overlay part.

I actually just tried this process today for the first time, that is vacuum bagging a male plug with CF. Have a question though. First it turned out better than I thought and was actually pretty glossy. I used the pink release ply from Fiberglast which is supposed to hold in more resin. My question is apparently when I applied vacuum some of the release film bunched up on certain point, mainly the curved surfaces. This obviously left some resin “wrinkles” in the finish. I was able to sand them out and then clearcoat, but my question is how can I prevent the release film from bunching up like that on curved surfaces? Should I try to apply vacuum very slowly and work out the wrinkles through the bag or is there someother way. I know this would not be so much of an issue on a female mold since the release film is on the backside of the part.

Thanks

Would a high elongation (flexible) bag help?

I thought about that and am going to get some. I believe it’s Wrightlon and is supposed to have a 400% elongation in the longitudinal direction and 375% in the lateral direction. That solves the bagging question but what can I do about the actual release film. I was using the Low Temp Release film from Fiberglast. OR are you saying I don’t need a release film, just use the bag?

Bryan

I think you’ll need the release film. Are you using breather between the release film and the bag?

Yes, using breather.
