Vac bag materials useage....................

:? I was curious if those of you with repetitious parts are reusing your bags and tape ?

If so ,how often ?

Any neat tricks to unbag and save the tape ?

I’m using the grey tape, and it doesent respond as if it were designed to be reused. Very strong.

I assume there are tapes designed for reuse…anyone have a favorite for this purpose ? :?:

P.S.-I’m doing Infusion

Ya, go to a custom silicone vacuum bagging system like from (I think this is the correct addy) www.bondline.com and tell them JM from GGROP sent you…

The proper link ishttp://www.bondlineproducts.com/

I watched them make and infuse a hood on tv, for the “bag” they polished the mold that had real wide flanges and squirted a couple of caulking tubes of silcone out and spead them around on the mold. They said they let it cure, Don’t kow how long, them sorta rolled it up. The next shot they were laying out the mat, directly to the mold, layed the silicone down, bolted down a mate to the wide flange, pulled a vacuum and infused the part with a Grey resin. No flow media, no breather, no peal ply, no gelcoat. The hood looked great when done but it was TV so who knows when the one we saw was made or how many tries it took to get a good one.

Thanks Bricklin…I forgot to pick that up yesterday (Sunday no less) when I went down to the classroom to help another adult work on a timely project…

So JM, your suggesting that just another Vac gag material thats slightly more flexible than what I have …is the route to go ?

I’ll have to step up completely to the silicone system and lose some valuable time with what I’ve already invested in.

I’ve tried to photograph the molds to show what my concerns are,but the black tooling GC is so dark it does not show the detail at all.

Is anyone using anything with good results on a detailed mold that has more input/ideas ?

If you are planning to make a real high #'s of that part, then go with a custom made silicone vacuum bagging sysytem from them as they will take your part and make the silicone bag over your finished part and you won’t believe the fine detail you can get then.

More $'s but over a lot of parts, it saves a ton of bagging material$ and worker$ time, which to me is more co$tly…

Indeed it would if I was doing “TONS OF PARTS”. However ,I’m only doing around 65 pieces and then sporatically after that .

I AM interested in their work …any idea in how they bid this type of work ?

My molds are about 5’x 12" in size and max depth is 2". They are not flat either.

seems like I remember someone posting about a slightly more flexible Vac Bag plastic that worked well at room temps in highs and lows of a given mold ?

Since I don’t work for Bondline, I don’t know but try E-mailing or calling them. Great people…

I also remember from last years Sampe trade show that Airtech had a kit to make your own silicone blanket that you might want to check out too…

airtech has them and I am ording them from my semi-local supplier and going to see how they work

Instead of the gooey tape I use tube-style bagging film and a clip-type seal. The seal is a “C”-shaped plastic tube and a solid rod. The open edge of the bag is laid over the open “C” and pinched with the rod. Both the tube bags and the clamps are available from www.acp-composites.com

You can also use the clamps with flat bag film if you tape the other edges. I just use ordinary clear shipping tape. This is what I do when I need a high-stretch bag and use the green material.

do you happen to have a picture of one when it is bagged?

I use the same things AndyFranklin is using. They work AWESOME!!! I order the 70" and cut it down to fit my poly bags.

Dannyhockin,
how do you measure the 70 inch. Is it 70 inches wide when laid flat(making it 140 inches in circumference)?

I think by referring to the “70 inches”…he means the locking channel or bead lock ? Sounds like it would come in different lengths and 70" might be their longer length. If his bag was 18" at the opening…then his 70" lock is cut down to fit. I could be wrong though ?
I think I’ll order some from them and see if it fits my project, thanks guys !

again do you have any pictures of this process

i think its the ‘stretchlon’ vac bag on here- https://www.airtechonline.com/htm/defaultIE.htm

Yeah, it’s 70" in total length. I just take a pair of dykes and cut them into thirds. My bags are 20" wide so it gives me 3 seals. Just imagine a U shaped channel. This would be the female part. The bag gets sandwiched into this female groove by way of a solid plastic tube. This would be the male part…hard to explain, easier to show. I’ll take a a couple of pics tomorrow night while I’m infusing some parts. I recommend everyone try these things, they’re only $12 for the 70" long one.

I am using some of the strechalon the thickest and it does not strech that much. They told me to get the thickest because it handles poly resin.

I wold love to find out more about the 70 inch bag. if anyone can give me specifics?
I am in need of cost savings for a new project and this may be just what the doc ordered.

Doug…The 70"item is only the bag seal(2 parts…male, female) the actual bags come only up to 60" if I’ve read the page right. . :?

I went ahead and ordered the 70"parts and some of their flex bagging,I’ll let you know how it works out.
