V weave joint - how do you do it?

Hi all,

I have a big project coming up and I would like to know how do you wet lay a perfect V-weave join similar to say Pagani Zonda bonnet , etc. Been looking online but not much info!

thank you in advance!

p.s. there was a Youtube video but I cant find it anymore.

I use spray adhesive to adhere a light fiberglass strip to one half of the carbon. Then I spray adhesive that down to the mold. The fiberglass allows you to have a clean cut. Then I place the other half of carbon down, align the pattern, and then adhere to the part. I use this when I do infusion, but it can be translated to wetlay.

Hi Wildcard a pic will be great to see how this turned out.

thanks.

Are you able to see the fiberglass behind the carbon fiber? Which type of fiber glass you use?
Someone mentioned here that they use rice paper.

Rice paper would work as well. Fiberglass that is completely saturated goes transparent, but I would place the fiberglass down on the part so that the carbon side is facing up so you don’t have to deal with that.

Ok, so let me get this straight:

  1. You spray some adhesive on CF face down
  2. put on some fiber glass on it then cut
  3. repeat for the other CF cloth and join them together

OK, so you so you wont be able to see the fiber glass through the cf (I am guessing that 4x4 twill will be dense enough)

Basically you use the fiberglass to have a clean cut, right?

I imagine you will only need to make the clean cut once on the first side you put down. The second layer would just overlap the back of your clean cut piece already in the mould. So in the end they are overlapped but to the eye may appear as a butt join.

Hi
I use a light coat of adhesive on the carbon then let it dry, next use a hand held wheel cutter with a straight to cut the fabric then lay it into the mould and line up the weave using a butt joint the strength will come for the subsequent layers of carbon.

Another option http://www.solarcomposites.com/composites/compositecarbon.html#3K4by4

They have v weave carbon for $34 a cut yard

Thanks a lot all! Looking forward to post some pictures of my new modified car interior.
