Using PVA release agent only?

Hi there, was just wondering if it was ok to just use release agent without waxing the mold? I understand that using release agent you usually get a funny surface finish but in my case surface finish is not of that important.

Therefore back to my original question, would my mold tend to stick if I just used release agent with out wax?

Further to the above question, I have not heard of this funny texture left behind from it’s use. What is it like?

Wax should always be use, even with PVA.

PVA will not be as smooth as a waxed mold (as long as the mold has a great polish finish) as most of time, PVA leaves an orange peel finish.

But what I like the best is semi permament mold releases!

When you spray PVA make sure you thin it a little with water. It will look like glass when dry. Also make sure you do a single misting coat for your first coat of PVA. Let it dry fully. Then spray you final two coats.

+1 on the semi perm release. Once you use it youll never go back.

what sort of surface do you get if you just have the vacuum bag in contact with one of the faces of the laminate? Does it seperate easily? I ask because I’m wondering if it would be possible to use a stock motorcycle fairing as a male plug and just cover the entire thing with a stretchy(or plain for that matter) vacuum bag and then lay fiberglass over it directly on the bag. Would the fiberglass seperate from the bag? how smooth would the surface of the fiberglass mold be?

What brand or semi permenant mold release do you guys like/use? Also, where can it be purchased?

SingleKote by Related Technologies in Orlando Florida. No website.

I also use there water born products HP100/HP123…you add them on top of the Singlekote if your dealing with very curvey/sharp molds. The parts come off with no prying at all. Cool stuff.

A lot of people also use Frekote by Loctite.

I wouldnt try it.

Most stretchy bags (like stretchlon) dont maintain its shape well when it comes in direct contact with resin.

If you want a quick flange use 3M aluminum tape around the edge of the part your trying to copy. Then use oil based putty to fill in any odd gaps or to create fillets.
