Ultra lightweight part - need some help!!!

Hi guys,

I want your opinion on some project of mine. I have to make a front bumper for my race car. I was thinking of laying just a single layer of 220 2x2 twill.

Do you think it’ll work or is the part going to crack? I want it to be as light as possible, so that’s why I’m not going with the standard few layers and soric that I usually use.

Best regards,
Mike

Just one layer of 220gsm twill in my opinion won’t hold up. If your really determined on making a lightweight bumper maybe you can consider using a core material.

What method and resin system are you using to make your bumper? This will also make a big difference in durability/flexibility.

I’m using epoxy system with a slow hardener. I’ll use infusion.

So you’re suggesting to use one layer of fiber with a layer of reinforcement?

P.S.- Thanks for the fast answer!

To make an ultra lightweight part, which holds shape, I guess you need 100 gr/m2 carbon, and honeycomb to create some thickness.

I was considering to put first layer 200 gr. 2x2 and a second layer of 2mm Soric. Do you think it’ll work out?

Yes, it will. Just define lightweight…

Should work, things to consider though are speeds your going to be driving at if its a race car.

Herman, I don’t have a targeted weight, but I want to make it light as possible without breaking it while pulling it out of the mold

C6Design, well it makes about 120 mph at the end of the strip.

2 hints: do some local reinforcement at the mounting points, and keep the Soric under a good vacuum for at least 30 minutes (pref. more) to equalise the pressure.

Would definitely agree on reinforcing the mounting points either using extra layers of carbon or I’m not sure how your bumper is mounted, a metal bracket.

Well I sure will reinforce the mounting point. The bumper is mounted with race clips similiar to those they put on the hoods. I will put one or two pieces of 660 gr. twill.

Herman, do you mean I have to put a vacuum on the Soric before I put it in the mould??? Because I was going to put both fiber and Soric in the mould and vacuum…then leave the part cure overnight!? What do you think?

Put it in the mould, then apply vacuum for at least 30 minutes.

Wow…I’ll absolutely do that!!! Thanks for the tips!!!
