I was wondering what thickness is recommend for spray on tooling gel coat for mold making. What thickness are ye guys applying ?
i just sort it out per weight, for example, 600gr per square meter, i mix about the right amount and then spray it all.
Always go as thick as you can so if you later on stick a part and have to sand or polish the mold, you will have more EGG shell of a tooling layer / surface to work with.
Also, thicker gel coat surface will help to prevent cloth / mat print thru with the first layers of reinforcements.
25-40mils thickness is recommended. This comes out to approx 2oz per sq ft.
Too thin and you get a bunch of problems like alligatoring etc…, and too thick brings high exotherm and shrinkage.
