Tooling Dough/Compound

Hi Guys,

Has anyone here used EL-323-TC tooling dough/compound from CASS Polymers?

I’m building a set of molds that need to be quite stable dimensionally, and I’ll be using tooling dough (1/2" thick or more) after a few layers of glass to save time and work. After the dough, more layers of glass.

EL-323-TC is 80 dollars for two gallons. Are there any better priced tooling compounds out there?

I can’t say it is something that I have used before. what sort of size are the moulds that your planning to make using this stuff? I know RTN made some moulds for a Lotus GT car from this (or a simular) product a few years ago to make some cheap tooling for making some wet lay carbon bodywork. I would be interested to know what everyone thinks…

I have used it before. I personally dont like tooling compounds but they are ok for quick low production molds.

I’ve used it quite a lot. Saves a lot of time, especially if it is difficult or impossible to pull a vacuum on the pattern. A cheaper method is Huntsman’s DT081 tooling compound , which comes in the form of a sand-like compound , but lighter and then you add your own resin.

This is the room temp cure Cass (formerly Adtech). I can’t remember if the 323-TC is high temp or not.

Sorry, mixed the photos up! That last post is the Cass two-part tooling dough. One part is blue and one part is yellow. You’ll need a mixer for large parts such as the photo.

Did you use the 323-TC over an epoxy surface coat?

Did you notice any exotherm during the cure cycle of the tooling compound?

Overall, would you use it again?

No exotherm problems with the Cass system.
You can apply it straight on to the surface coat or you can lay three layers of 10oz fabric down, then 1/2" tooling dough, then three more layers of glass.
Yes , I’d use it again and I’d advise it for anyone using tooling dough for the first time. However, I use the DT081 method with very cheap resin as it is cheaper.
