We recently started working with Textreme. Very cool looking.
Good stuff.
Havent had a chance to use it but, sounds like it would be a nice material. How well does it conform to curvatures?
Curves are no fun with spread tow. If you have the thermoplastic fixed Textreme it is ok but not easy.
Love the look of spread tow.
I’m no expert AT ALL with spread tow. I did buy some to experiment with. I did a wet lay up onto a male mold with very little curve to the mold. It was difficult to keep the weave from distorting, for me at least. The tows on mine are about 1/3 inch width. I left the one yard roll lay around and now it’s pretty mangled from improper storage. I believe there are some salvagable sections of the cloth I want to use. The weave I bought is not Textreme and has no film on it. Ideas on how to lay it without messing up the weave pattern are greatly appreciated!
Use spray adhesive and a light glass fabric. You can stick the glass on the backside. I do that in infusion.
what brand of spray adhesive? … and thank you
I found some for sale on ebay… I can’t pay this much as it’s more than i need…
at $900 for 25 yards that’s $36 a yard.
We are still experimenting with the layers. The sample material was 100gsm, very thin. on this case we had a few layers of 3k twill and the did the outer layer with the 100gsm textreme. This does not give the ideal finish because 1 layer is so thin that the texture of the 3k actually will transpose through the textreme layer. For our production cases we will be using multiple layers of 160gsm textreme. With a pure textreme case we should be able to reduce the overall case weight by about 20-30%. Our standard MacBook Pro/Air case weight when fully fabricated weighs in just over 1 lbs but a chunk of that weight comes from the padded interior. I think we can get this weight down to well below a pound. Always fun to work with new materials. Just wanted to share our development process with fellow carbon fiber enthusiast. I’ll post some final product pictures soon.
Cheers,
Kevin
Looks nice!! Well done!
NOICE!
I wish there wasn’t such variability in the woven tape…it always looks…bumpy. Meh. Wish I had more of textreme…they only send 5" samples, even when you need 12" for tension testing!
Thanks for all the advice and compliments everyone.
Love the 12K spread tow! Getting ready to wrap a guitar for Hard Rock in it :D.
my work… from textreme…
Nice work!
I like it!
Perfect cut! Very nice work.
