technora + unrelated brain fart

Got a couple quick questions.

Saw black technora for sale on solarcomposites and am wondering how it looks compared to carbon fiber. Its basically black dyed aramid.

As well, I am looking for some fabric similar to the carbon used on the Carbon Zonda S. Wondering what weave this is?

I had a slight brain fart…I forgot what the 2x2 and the 3k mean…Which one is the thicker of the weave, and which is the thickness of the fiber bundles?

Thanks guys

the zonda (IIRC) uses a 4x4 twill for it’s outtermost layer.

so then the it would be a 3k 4x4 twill correct? which means the 3k relates to the # of fiber strands in a bundle (tow)?

yes … . . . . . .

I’ve been reading this composites book and it says that aramid fibers don’t wet out as well as carbon, the individual filaments don’t really get wet out but rather the larger tows get wet out more so, so if it is required for structural them it might be prone to delamination a bit prematurely, using carbon and aramid together you can better take advantage of each of their properties.

I ordered some of the black technora from solarcomposites, as well as some 4x4 twill. Will let you know how the technora is. I am yet to have any issues with delam and aramid as of yet. It sandwiches very well between layers of carbon with no delam issues. Even as an outer layer, using epoxy there appears to be no delam issues.

Do you have any pics ot the things you’ve made?

The technora I got is really some cool fabric. I had to check my order twice to make sure I wasn’t confusing it will the carbon twill. Both the twill and the reg weave look very close to carbon. The only difference in looks I can notice is a slightly tighter weave on the technora and a slight bit less glimmer when put side by side with cf. Think this stuff will be perfect for some stuff I have on the go!

How much did one linear yard cost of the Technora?

SolarComposites is good, i really like them for hybrid, texalium and related cloth. Nice people and decent prices.
