Surface finishing epoxy/carbon components?

I am in the process if re-panelling a mk2 Golf with carbon bodywork. All the moulds tools are done and i have started to lay-up the final panels. I had just planned to leave the surface pretty much as it comes out of the mould but YOU LOT have raised my game.

The panel i have done so far run no gel coat and the surface has a few pin holes here and there. As i say i was just going to leave this looking raw but the CSL finish would probably be better.

I obviously cannot just clear coat over the top as the pin holes would always be there. Is the answer brushing on and sanding back epoxy or is there a simpler solution/product??

The availabilty of a water clear gel as apposed to pond water clear gel is none existant here in the UK(unless anyone can point me different)

Cheers
Richard

i think you can just fill the pinholes with a syringe, sand the remiaining pimple off and then clearcoat?

thinned out duratec top coat will fill pinholes rather well. Just don’t sand before you fill them or you’ll have a heck of a time getting the white sand dust out of the holes.

I’ve made that mistake before!

(raises hand) me too

and me

That’s a good idea. I had not tried that yet. Thanks!

How are you applying it and how much do you thin it down?

I was just going to add the same question!!

you’re mentioning epoxy and gel coat in the same paragraph. please tell us what resin system you’re using for the molds and the parts so everyone can be clear about what you’re doing.

the epoxy resin is a SP product in a polyester mould tool with no gel on the component at all.
