surface coating

Since I am unable to use polyester or vinylester resins I am restricted to epoxies.

I want to surface coat an frp mold with epoxy. The issues at hand are: gravity possibly making clear epoxy run downhill and not staying put on vertical surfaces. The other issue is a service temperature of 200F - 275F. The surface coat needs to not yellow or turn gray over time due to oxidation or heat.

It needs to be room temp cure or oven cure under 120F. I don’t want to spend lots of money building high temp molds that can withstand higher oven temps.

Can someone recommend an epoxy for this purpose?

epoxy, no. but you CAN use transparent polyester gel.leave it one day to dry completely, so your fabric won’t stick, no other reason, and proceed with epoxy and carbon. have tried it many times, never had any failures between the two products.

yes Aga…epoxy LOL. polyester will get you high as a kite!

I found out from Resin Services that HTR212-386 can be used as a surface coat with epoxy parts. Brush the HTR into the mold, let it B-stage then do the lay up. Might get slight print thru, but a few coats of 2K urethane clear paint after will help that. Or maybe I will just paint it with some MinWax LOL ( just messin’ with you guys )

Revchem sells a face coat which is their gel coat for epoxies resins.

Why are you unable to use PE?

“Use Polyester and be happy man” :stuck_out_tongue:

Fastrr,

If it is the smell of the polyester that is limiting you… I do know a company on the east coast that uses a styrene free polyester. Not sure about the cure temp though. PM for details.

Polyester is great for some things. The smell just lingers forever though and has a strong odor when wet. I use polyester, but in tiny amounts… less than 1oz. I’ll be looking for a 10 minute epoxy to replace it though.

Is it epoxy or polyester face coat?

I asked the sales person at Resin Services and they say the HTR212-386 can be used as a face coat. I’ll know more after I try it.
