I’ve just finished a nice set of epoxy molds and I’m ready to layup some epoxy/glass parts. What should I use as a surface coat for the parts. I want to avoid print through and provide a nice finish for subsequent painting. My original thought was to add some thixotropic silica to my laminating resin, brush it on, let it tack up and then proceed with the layup. What do you guys propose?

A company that I’m in touch with has an Epoxy “Face coat” coming out very soon, but until then?
for the most part you are going to get a little print through that can easily be sanded out, try using surfacing veil as your first layer, that helps a little with print through
There is a UV stablished water clear epoxy available here in the UK, that is intended for surf board manufacture. Could be ideal for surface coat applications for carbon parts.

Goto the resin page here… http://www.fibretechgb.co.uk/DefaultHome.htm
It has some surface coats, never used them myself though.
