Super 77 and Frekote 770?

After experiencing dissatisfaction with wax and pva release, I decided to give Frekote 770 a shot. Stripped the mold, sealed it with FNC, then applied 3 coats of 770 with proper time intervals. This mold turned out as predicted, very slick! Was getting set up to do an infusion and discovered Super 77 has no power to hold my cloth in place, I mean none. I did mist the glue on the cloth rather than directly to the mold. Do’es this make a difference? I wanted to ask here first before spraying glue into my mold and making a big mess. Because of the detail and sharp corners with this mold, the cloth has to be positioned securely with some type of adhesion. I know Adam shoots clear in Frekote treated molds but how in the world Adam do you get paint to lay down without simply beading up and falling in a puddle? I have no doubt release will be elementary but it seems now I’m to far the other direction. Help!

Hi John!

I know a lot of people who use an in mold coating spray a very light mist first, let that set up, and then increse the thickness or volume of each additional coat. The first mist layer helps the others adhere to the molds surface.

Super 77 is some pretty sticky stuff, so I can’t imagine it not sticking at all, however I spray it to the mold and not to the fabric. Also, spraying directly onto the fabric may cause pinholes and dry spots due to the adhesive being applied directly onto and probably into the weave of the fabric. This may not be the best thing to do, but I’ve never tried it, so I’m not sure.

Peace and love!

Alright, I did as advblane suggested and misted a couple of lite passes of Super 77 across a portion of a mold. It held a little bit but still not to my satisfaction. After pulling the cloth up the adhesive could still be removed quite easily. I’m thinking maybe if the first layer will stay put well enough to get the whole stack layed up I might be OK, a pre-form of sorts I quess. This raises another question. Little is published on this technique of pre-forming the stack. Does anybody here do this, and what do you use to retain the shape?
