suggestions for a mold

I would like to do my car mirrors in carbon fiber, but I don’t know how I can make the mold because it has a complex form.
Some ideas?

I use the original mirror with electric regulation, so I would make a piece like the original inside

I just got a 2012 Countryman. How easy are the covers to do, vs the entire body, which you want to do. Which btw: looks impossible.

probably not gonna beable to do the neck with it unless you do something custom… you are better off doing a wet layup then doing a mold and starting from scratch…

suprised there isnt a carbon market out there for mini coopers (judging by looks of vehicle)

this is my grande punto abarth

riff what it means “btw”? google does not translate it

bluecarbon I would like to build them with resin infusion…with a multi piece mold…my biggest doubt is how i can di the front lapel, photo 8.
The original mirror is made 1 lower part, 2 entire body, 3 cover (red).
I would like to buil entire body + cover in a single piece.
Tomorrow i think how i can do it

the red cover would be the easiest to do…

problem with doing your number 7 and 8 photo due to internal parts… you could do a mold of that separate then epoxy it inside after you do your actual part carbon peice… you will have to re drill the holes ect… its alot of work and isnt an easy task… youre looking at alot of time spent doing it…

yes it’s a lot of work but I try to do it.
yes I do the internal piece in another mold then I paste in a second time with the entire body.
I try to do it

It can be made only with prepreg and autoclave. This is how you can get an acceptable look.
With resin infusion would be a mess.

I know its cheating.

roberto why only with prepreg and autoclave? ok, using prepreg and autoclave you can have the best quality…but also using resin infusion you can have good results.

Wightmarine thanx, I know wrap, but I don’t like it…personal challenge to make them in carbon

I told that because the placement of dry fibers in a so small and complicated part leads to an almost random pattern of the weave. Unless you want to paint the part with color, it would be unpleasant to see.
It all depends on the level of quality that’s good for you.

ok thanx for the answer. I try to do mold and piece, and we’ll see what comes out

It is no problen in Infusion. You can get very clean cuts, just as clean as an prepreg and the surface will be better than a prepreg surface.
But it be a lot of work to make a multipiece mould. But that wil be the same work for an infusion mould than for a prepreg mould.
Take a look at your mirror where the original tool was splitted, that where I would prefer to split the mould also.
