Doing a couple of steering wheels
Looks really nice, care to share your process?
BMW steering wheel, e46 M3?
These are late corvette.
They are 5.7oz twill carbon fiber and surfaced with .7 oz. glass. I choose not to say the exact layup but it’s robust and will last with our high interior temps down here in SW Florida. I use duratech for the clear. It’s a lot of fun to see one of these once they’re done. We split the twill pattern on the one making it effectively a v pattern. The other is a continuous pattern. The leather is done by a guy in Englewood Fl.
Hollow? What do they weigh?
WOW those look great! You know you did a great job when they look like they could be OEM. Any pics installed?
We build a part over the original wheel using mulitple layers of carbon and an outer layer of glass to complete the structural nature of the piece. The surface is duratech.
No pictures of this one installed. I have one that I did for a Carrera coming back to the shop for some other things this week. I’ll take some pics.
Are using carbon fiber braided sleeves or just regular twill sheets.?
Sheet fabric.
Cool. You do good work :).
did you coat the final coat with auto paint? if so won’t the paint peel off after awhile since our hand keep rubbing the steering wheel?
It’s duratech. Pretty robust.
It’s a top coat resin or a simply lack?
Ohhhhhhh boy do I like that! How did you manage to get the leather to mesh to the carbon. Care to show some close ups… Excuse me. The vinyl.
It’s a top coat resin.
dallasb84, It’s leather. Wherever the carbon stops, I make sure the cut line is deep so that the leather guy can tuck his work in enough. It works out pretty well.
