Spraying Duratec Clear

Hi all,

I am going to give using the Duratec clear product a shot and I have a few quick questions. This will be used as a topcoat/gelcoat before hand laying up some CF.

  1. Do you thin the mixture before spraying? If so what do you thin it with and how much/ratio?

  2. What size spray nozzle do you use and at what pressure?

  3. what do you clean your spray gun with?

Thanks!

I used to use it and didn’t thin it. It would spray easily with my 2.0mm tip. You can spray it easily with a 2.0 or 2.5mm tip then clean out the gun with acetone.

OP, we use a heavy amount of DT, you can buy DT thinner, that is what we use to thin it out for spraying, the can says 20% by weight (from memory) but we never go past 15%. We have sprayed it with as tight as a 1.4 tip but generally use a 1.7

Acetone cleans it out, just know it kicks quick in large amounts and if it gels in the gun it is not an easy clean up.

Also, we use Endura top coat and finds it works a bit better, just in case you feel like trying it out.

Oh one more question:

Do you use an HVLP or standard gun? If standard, gravity fed or siphon ok?

A good place to look is on the Duratc website. They have a section on application of their products and give recommendations on tip size, pressure for spraying, thinning etc.

HVLP is what we use.
