spray guns

Has anyone used the mat Chopper Gun? and any of the spray gel coat guns? do they work good and any recommendation? thanks

I just use the cup gun one that you mix the catalyst yourself. I got it online somewhere for $80 The ES brand. I love it and works perfectly for what I need it for. I have all the sizes of tips and the only problem I have is I keep forgetting to clean it after words and I the gel coat hardens on the lid and fuses the tip to the lid  I think I have bough 5 lids so far. As far as the chopper gun I have a smaller one like the one Fibreglast sells and have not tried it yet

The lids are HDPE (unless you have the older alum one) and the cured PER should just pop out afterwards. I always throw them in the Thermoclean or Acetone buckets asap.

I get the cups at Smart and Final…but you can get PE bags as they are cheap and throw aways and keeps your PE cup clean…with the older alum cap type one.

Thanks for the info guys. So the spray gun i just for gel coat or resin right? instead of brushing it on you spray it on? and is it worth the money?

you cant spray the resin, only the gelcoat, its worth it for larger parts and regular use yes.

actually you can spray resin if you use the right tip…I spray resin with my ES gun all the time

but most people dont is what i meant

oic so you can spray resin with different tips? does that work good? and waht is a decent gun and price range thanks

I’ve used my ES cupgun a couple of times to spray poly gelcoat. It gave a good wet coat, but man, it sure has a lot of overspray.

Then I tried using the same gelcoat tip, but to spray some poly resin. Big mistake. You’d certianly use a bigger nozzle to do this successfully.

My Magnum/Venus chopper gun system uses a FIT nozzle system which puts the poly resin out in a low-pressure fan. You can choose different tips to vary degrees of fan width, and to pass different volumes per minute. This makes spraying poly very easy. It is uniformly mixed thruout the layup, and if your doing big layups, that means a lot. You can use it as either a chopper/sprayup gun…or just as a sprayup gun, and again, the versatility is very nice. Emmissions are nothing like using the ES cup gun.
