THere’s something out there right now that’s looking at servers hosting web forums real hard. We have specialized intrusion detection software that knows what to look for when these things come looking to get into your network. A lot of forums are slowing down due to the load. Our vulnerability testing server which is essentially a “super hacker” in it’s own right was just updated by McAfee last week with over 40,000 new scripts, apps, programs and protocols! Each one was some sort of process that a hacker would use to get into your network. The bulk of these are out of date and probably no longer used but you still have to protect agains them and the “script kiddies” that use them.
The next update of the McAfee VA tool will allow administrators to toss back multiple request from identified sources of intrusions. Sort of like the call zapper thingies. The legality of such technology hasn’t been tested yet. It would be like a “Denial of Service” attack on the attacker.
The worst thing you can do to a spam message is reply to it. Once you do that your e-mail address (which is in the public domain from the time it was created) goes from a “valid spammer list or database” to an “Active Spammer List or Database”. There are programs which manage these two types of lists. Web siphons will collect them for sale. A “valid” list with 1,000,000 e-mail addresses will sell for $20. An “active” list with 1,000,000 e-mail addresses will sell for $10K or more! Guess which list you end up on if you reply to a spammer?
