Something new

I came up with this idea of inserting red kevlar in to carbon last week and gave it a try. I have never seen anyone else do this. This is how it came out:

cool! How did you…?

remove a tow, thread a red one in?

added in edit:
It looks very nice. what’s it for?

what a nice piece. reminds me of the whole idea of black leather with red stitches

interesting…

A real piece of art! I like the perfect finish!

Thats pretty cool Howard…guessing ,like others…that the tows were pulled etc.
BUT!..did you also adhese the new red tows to the old BEFORE they were fished on through ??
Thats how I see it done in my ‘minds-eye’,lol.
Cheers,Vinny

Thanks. Thats right Vinny, I used the carbon toe to pull the kevlar through.

i’m almost 100% positive you can buy material like that allready made with a red, blue, green or orange kevlar tow in the carbon. Kinda hard to get but i have used the red and blue before, but not sure if thats the exact same thing that you did here or not.

they do make hybrids that consist of colored kevlar or e-glass and carbon. however they are not very subtle, they are usually an even amount of Kevlar to carbon. Of course if you really wanted you could have it custom woven but you would need to buy alot.

all kinds of perdy stuff here…

Those materials are incredibly stiff! They actually crack when you bend them!

I have worked the hybrid glass-carbon weaves… they suck. Too stiff unless you are making flat panels or a part that has no bends or sharp corners. The “glass” tows are more like a very stiff plastic.

what I suspect is the glass tows are dipped or coated with colored plastic then woven into the cloth.

in black coloured glass, the whole cloth passes through a ‘tub’ with paint…thats why its stiff. its a bastard to work, i agree…

Very good quality, good job;)
