Solution for laying down clear on frekote - dry dots

Hey guys , Im trying to spray a clearcoat onto mould prepared with frekote.

The layer i get is quiet fine but i get some craters at random places like 2-3mm spots mostly they gather on areas - so it look like 0.5sqm of nice surface then 0.1sqm of random dry spots.

What might cause that? Does this might be water from compresor

I can fill by hand those dry spots and clear stay at place, but this is quiet time consuming.

Sounds like what happens when using a high-slip release agent like Frekote. Try applying 2 coats of release wax over the top of the Frekote, this should give you the surface tension to apply gelcoat.

When applying clear the first coat should be a lite mist. Allow this to fully dry. I then do another slightly heavier mist coat and let dry for about a half hour. Then I’m able to do a full coat.

Thanks guys , will check both solutions sounds reasonable

What Ro Yale said works well for me. You apply a very light ‘dusting’ coat that doesn’t have enough volume to pool together. After one or two of those you’ll be able to spray a normal coat, and the dusting coat won’t show through on the finished part.

yes it helps , thanks… and by the way have you ever experience situation when clear didnt stick with epoxy? i demould my part and like 50% left on the part and 50 on mould , what is more it happened to me first time.

Secondly - because of this situation - any ideas on how to remove clear ?

I use a 2K polyurethane (PPG DCU 2002). Important to test with your paint. The clear always sticks to the epoxy. I have left the clear in the mold too long and it starts to detach from the mold and I just blow it out with an air hose. By too long I’m talking about 3-4 days. I usually paint in late afternoon and laminate the next day.
