Small part infusion

I dont often infuse cosmetic parts as am not really set up for it in my boat shop, but was asked if I would do a small section of carbon to cover a car part this week. It got a few laughs from the visitors who popped in and it made me chuckle as well. so I thought I would post a couple of pics. Just to show for those who want to do small parts at home on tight budgets you dont have to fork out for expensive kit to get good results.

Beer bottle catch pot & Pickle jar degassing chamber. I degassed the resin using the resin feed tube which was pushed just through hole in the pickle jar lid above resin and tacky taped sealed, then to infuse just push resin tube down into resin which breaks the tacky tape seal so there was no need to clamp off the resin feed line. Love it. Creative solutions…!

Back before composites I was working with an engineer who needed to degas a resin we were looking to use to pot in some components. We had never done anything like that. We didn’t have a vacuum pump. I asked him to bring his wifes “healthy” new car to work the next day. I brought a stainless steel dog bowl in and a sheet of plexiglass. I piped into the car’s engine vacuum and got a little over 17 inches of vacuum which did a great job to proof out our test. From that we bought a pump and built a new vacuum / degassing station for our production facility based on that quick test.
